TextPrep
The science

Why a daily text actually works

TextPrep is built on two of the most thoroughly tested ideas in learning research: studying a little at a time across many days, and practicing by answering questions instead of re-reading notes. When researchers compare common study methods head to head, these two come out on top.

1

A little every day beats one big cram

The spacing effect, also called spaced repetition, is one of the most replicated findings in memory research, and the advantage grows the longer the gap before your test. A daily question that runs right up to test day is built for exactly that.

Answering a question beats re-reading

When researchers meta-analyzed ten common study techniques, practice testing and spacing ranked at the top, while re-reading and highlighting landed near the bottom. Pulling an answer out of memory, then seeing the correct one, is that high-value version, and every TextPrep question comes with the feedback that multiplies it.

Spacing + retrieval, one day apart

The two are strongest together: researchers call it spaced retrieval practice. A retrieval question, with feedback, spaced a day apart. That, in one line, is exactly what TextPrep does.

Straight talk: what the research does and doesn't claim

  • No study has tested an SMS service or a specific SAT point gain: TextPrep applies the methods, it doesn't guarantee a score.
  • Spacing helps in math too, but the effect there is more modest than for fact- and vocab-heavy material.
  • Effects are clearest on recall and core skills; gains on deeper reasoning are likely smaller.

What TextPrep is (and isn't)

We're the glue, not the whole toolkit.

TextPrep isn't here to replace Khan Academy, the Blue Book, your prep class, practice tests, or your tutor. Those are where the deep work happens, and you should keep doing them.

What a daily question does is bind those sessions together. It keeps what you learned on Sunday from fading by Wednesday, holds your momentum between tutoring appointments, and keeps the material fresh right up to test day. One small rep a day is the connective tissue that makes everything else you're already doing stick.

Your toolkit does

Deep learning: full lessons, timed practice tests, working through tough concepts with a tutor or class.

TextPrep does

The daily upkeep between all of that: one question to keep it warm, retrieve it, and carry the momentum to test day.
