What is the GRE?
The GRE General Test is the most widely accepted graduate-admissions exam, used by thousands of master's, MBA, and doctoral programs worldwide. It measures the verbal reasoning, quantitative reasoning, and analytical writing skills that graduate study demands.
Unlike undergraduate admissions tests, the GRE is taken by adults applying to specific programs, often while working. That makes flexible, fit-it-into-your-day preparation especially valuable for GRE candidates.
How the GRE is timed and scored
The current GRE runs just under 2 hours across Verbal Reasoning, Quantitative Reasoning, and one Analytical Writing task. The multiple-choice sections are section-adaptive: how you do on the first verbal or quant section sets the difficulty of the next.
Verbal and Quantitative are each scored from 130 to 170 in one-point increments, and Analytical Writing is scored 0 to 6. Scores stay valid for five years, so many candidates prepare once and apply across several cycles.
The best way to study for the GRE
The GRE leans heavily on vocabulary and reasoning patterns: precisely the kind of knowledge that repeated retrieval over many days locks in better than a single cram. Reviewing word lists once rarely sticks; meeting words repeatedly over weeks does.
