Retrieval practice: why answering beats re-reading
Highlighting feels productive but barely moves the needle. Pulling an answer from memory is the part that actually sticks.
Open most students' study setup and you'll find the same tools: a highlighter, a stack of notes, a textbook with passages read and re-read until they feel familiar. It looks like studying. It feels like studying. And it's one of the weakest ways to actually learn something.
The problem isn't effort. It's that re-reading builds a feeling of knowing without building the thing underneath it. The words start to look familiar, your brain reads that familiarity as mastery, and you close the book confident about material you can't actually reproduce when it counts. Researchers call this the fluency illusion, and it's why so many students walk into a test sure they knew it and walk out wondering what happened.
What works instead
The fix is almost annoyingly simple: instead of putting information back in front of your eyes, make yourself pull it out of your head. Answer a question. Try to recall the formula before you look it up. Solve the problem before you check the solution. This is called retrieval practice, and across a large body of research it's one of the most reliable ways to turn something you've seen into something you actually know.1
The mechanism is worth understanding, because it explains why it feels harder. Every time you retrieve a fact from memory, instead of re-reading it, you're doing real work: reconstructing the information rather than just recognizing it. That effort is the signal to your brain that this is worth keeping. Recognition asks nothing of you, so it teaches your brain nothing. Retrieval asks for something, and the asking is the point.
Why the harder path is the better one
There's a catch that trips people up. Retrieval practice often feels worse in the moment. Re-reading is smooth and comfortable; trying to answer a question you're not sure about is bumpy and a little uncomfortable. Students frequently rate re-reading as the more effective method precisely because it feels easier, and they're wrong about that. The discomfort of pulling an answer from memory is the feeling of learning happening.
This is also why a question you get wrong is not wasted. Attempting to recall, missing, and then seeing the correct answer strengthens the memory more than never having struggled at all. The struggle plus the correction is a more powerful combination than a clean re-read that felt effortless and left nothing behind.
What this means for how you study
You don't have to throw out your notes. You have to change what you do with them. After you read something, close the book and try to say it back. Turn your notes into questions and answer them from memory. Do problems before you study the worked solution, not after. Every time you choose "answer it" over "look at it again," you're trading a comfortable illusion for durable learning.
That's the whole idea behind a daily question. One question a day is a small, low-stakes act of retrieval: you pull an answer out, you see the explanation, and the material gets a little more permanent each time. A paragraph you highlight fades. A question you answer stays.
